In 1997 a group of women, local
and expatriate, formed The Sunshine Group to support
and complement the activities of the Selangor Cheshire
Home.

The
Sunshine Mission
1. To be part of the social
link of the residents.
2. To provide vital caring support to the residents.
3. To promote a greater awareness of the needs and concerns
of disabled in the wider community.
The Sunshine Activities

Regular
sessions at the Home with the residents in a variety
of activities e.g. art and craft, games, sing-along. |
| 2. |
Organized outings
for the resident to shopping malls, parks, schools. |
| 3. |
Organized visits
to kindergartens and schools to promote greater
awareness of the disabled in the community. |
| 4. |
Fund raising in various
activities – handicraft sales / raffles etc.
The proceeds are utilized for the general benefit
of the residents. |

Recycling Project
– which is ongoing and the proceeds from which
go to Selangor Cheshire Home. |
Special Projects

The Sunshine
Garden – the Sunshine Group helped to beautify
and green the Home with a garden aptly named ‘The
Sunshine Garden’. |

Batik Sessions –
the Sunshine Group engages the creativity of the
residents in batik drawing sessions with En. Lazim
of Karyaneka. The batik pieces are then stitched
into wall hangings for sale. |

Running of the KL
Sentral Thrift Shop – the Sunshine Group helped
the residents in managing the shop from July 2005
to Nov 2006. The residents now take turns I the
day to day running of the shop. |

Provision of regular
servicing of the residents’ wheelchairs for
efficient mobility. |

2 picture books,
‘My Best Friend’ and ‘My Shop
and My Best Friend’ written by Keats Markandu
as part of the ongoing awareness campaign for the
disabled were launched at the British Council, KL
on 3 Dec 2006, the International Day of Disabled
Persons. Together with the residents, the Sunshine
Group visited schools, kindergartens and colleges
to promote the disability message through the books.
All proceeds were donated to the Selangor Cheshire
Home. |
