YOUNG VOICES: CHESHIRE ALLIANCE OF YOUNG VOICES PWDs SELANGOR
 

Background:


Starting as a pilot project “The Young Voices” is a global program started by Leonard Chesire Disabilities and worked through local partners in 12 countries in 2005.
Its goal is to mobilize the energy and building the skills of young disabled persons who are above 18 and under 26 years of age to campaign for the rectification and implementation of UN Convention for Rights of Person With Disabilities.
Formed with the realization that there were no groups that represent the young physically disabled in Selangor.

It was launched on the 2nd November 2008 by the YBhg Dato’ Meme Zainal Rashid, Director General of Social Welfare Department of Malaysia in conjunction with the official launching of the “Employment for People with disabilities and Entrepreneurship Handbook 2008”.

Objectives:

1. To build leadership and provide active engagement of young physically disabled people in advocacy and campaigning in the process of building understanding society and authorities on the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.
2. To know each other closely and to create a better understanding among the PWDs inspite of their physical or disability differences through motivation especially to those that were segregated from society.
3. To create an understanding on the importance of having the knowledge on their rights as PWDs so that they can educate the society to recognize and understand their needs.
4. To build an understanding on the advantages, disadvantages or the needs among the Persons with Disabilities themselves.
5. To share experiences and learn lessons together to promote best practices and policies by the authorities on disability and related issues in which will be benefited by everyone.
